Parking garage collapse investigation
No one was injured but the incident is raising questions about the safety of similar structures in our area

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A Galleria area parking garage is shut down while investigators look into what caused part of it to crumble.

HFD officials say just before 8pm Monday, they received a call that the roof of a parking garage on Riverway at South Post Oak collapsed from the eighth floor onto the seventh floor.

There were cars exiting the structure as the collapse happened. There is still concern there could be a secondary collapse at the building.

Fortunately, there were no injuries due to the collapse.

"We are lucky that it happened when it did," said nearby resident Maxina Mueller.

Even the security detail didn't believe what they were seeing this morning. Last night's collapse created a parking shortage in the area.

"Nobody told us where we could park," said one commuter.

Crews are working right now to stabilize it and prevent any further collapse. A city spokesperson says it is not their responsibility to inspect these structures. The city says that task is left up to the property owner.

Repeated calls to the property owner's office went unanswered.
