HOUSTON (KTRK) -- An off-duty reserve deputy constable is in stable condition after he was shot multiple times in northeast Houston.
Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen visited the reserve deputy in the hospital Saturday morning.
"My worst nightmare would be, which would be one of the worst things for me, obviously, if one of my officers had been killed," said Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen.
Rosen said the reserve deputy underwent surgery on Saturday morning hours after he was shot.
"In terms of his wounds, in terms of his health, he's stable. He's doing fine. It's going to take him a while to recover," said Constable Rosen.
According to Houston Police, at about 12:45 am on Saturday , the off-duty reserve deputy constable was picking up an acquaintance from a remote area near Cavalcade and Lavender. We're told after getting in the vehicle, the acquaintance became aggressive, hitting the deputy over the head with the butt of a gun and firing shots, striking him several times.
Police say it was an attempted robbery. The reserve deputy fired back, hitting the man. The acquaintance then took off on foot.
The suspect was on the loose for about an hour overnight. Canine units were brought in to assist the search. Canines were not able to locate the suspect. About an hour after the shooting, a man believed to be the suspect showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound.
Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen said the deputy has been with the department for two years.
No word at this point in time why the reserve deputy was picking up his friend.
Precinct 1 will conduct an internal affairs as with all officer-involved shooting.
HPD will oversee the criminal investigation.
Both men are expected to survive.
