Neighbors meet to reflect on shooting rampage in West University

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Residents from across the area met Tuesday during "National Night Out" to reflect on the recent shooting rampage in West U.

"National night is a night where the police and the community come together to fellowship and discuss issues that's within the community that may need police addressing," HPD Sgt. Kelvin Johnson said.

Neighbors in the community used the night to get to know each other better.

"Most of us are very busy, we all have dogs and families and all that kind of stuff and to have a time to sit down and really connect and even meet new people in the neighborhood was very important," Carolina Jimenez-Marcos said.

If anyone knows how important it is to help each other, it would be Lee Williams.

Williams lives at the intersection where police say Nathan Desai opened fire last week. He ran back inside his home to get a flashlight and keep others from driving into danger.

The suspect in Monday's West U shooting rampage was armed with three firearms and several thousands rounds of ammunition, police have revealed.

"I don't know what I was thinking other than trying to prevent other traffic from going down there to get shot," Williams added.
