No emotion for mother convicted of capital murder
Defense attorneys say she suffered from mental illness when she drowned her infant son

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A mother accused of burying her two-month-old alive has been found guilty of capital murder. Narjes Modarresi, 32, was on trial in her son's death. Prosecutors say the mother placed her son in a puddle of water face down near Buffalo Bayou, causing him to drown in April 2010.

There was no reaction from Modarresi when she learned she was found guilty of capital murder. During the week and a half long trial, Modarresi showed little to no emotion and after hearing she will spend the rest of her

life behind bars was no different.

Modarresi's friend Sedigh Hashemi said, "I don't think she deserved it, 'cause she was sick. She did it not because she was a bad person. She did it because she was sick."

The defendants attorneys argued Modarresi buried her two-month-old alive back in April 2010 because of her severe mental illness. It was an argument the jury clearly didn't buy.

"I just think the emotion of the moment basically overwhelmed the logic and the testimony of physicians that this tragedy was a result of mental illness, period," said defense attorney George Parnham.

Modarresi will be automatically sentenced to life in prison without parole.
