Houston Pride officials to beef up security

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Organizers for Houston LGBT Pride Celebration say they will meet to discuss how to keep festival goers safe after 49 people and the shooter were killed in a gay nightclub in Orlando.

In light of threats and attacks against LGBT events in Florida and California, Houston's annual Pride Parade will go on with heightened security.

Houston's Pride events are some of the largest in the country. This year's festivities will continue on Saturday, June 25, says CEO Frankie Quijano.

"Today is a tragic loss for the LGBT community, and we keep the victims, as well as those affected, in our hearts as we move forward together as a community," Quijano says.

The nightclub killing is the worst mass shooting in U.S. history and the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil since the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Officials are investigating it as as a "domestic terror incident."

Quijano says there will be an increased presence between Houston police and additional security officers throughout the event.

Event officials encouraged attendees to remain alert during the Pride week events, and to report suspicious behavior to police.

These meetings come on the heels of a potential threat against Pride events in Los Angeles, after a "heavily armed" man was arrested with plans to attend, according to Mayor Eric Garcetti.

The FBI says the arrest is not related to the Orlando nightclub shootings.

This is not the first time Houston LGBT Pride Celebration has had to beef up security. The organization added additional security after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.
