Borris Miles: New offices, more robust services in Houston's Senate District 13
Senator-elect Borris Miles said he's going to be focusing on constituent services as his first priority.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The largest Senate seat in Texas covers much of Houston -- and there's a new man on the job.

"Right now, I'm focusing on building continuity and coalitions and working with my colleagues -- my future collages," Senator-elect Borris Miles told Eyewitness News.

"I've traveled across this great state and I've visited with the majority with the exception of about six of my colleagues, so I understand what their needs are and they understand what my needs are," Miles said. "I'm going to be focusing on constituent services as my first priority."

One of Miles' top priorities: five new offices across the district so constituents can get help more easily.

"I want to serve the people who put me in this position," he said. "Constituent service throughout our district is needed."

Miles replaces Rodney Ellis, who is taking a seat on the Harris County Commissioner's Court.

Miles was first elected to serve as the State Representative for District 146 in November of 2006. He was re-elected in November 2010.

He is a lifelong resident of Houston, growing up in Sunnyside, where he attended Jack Yates High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice and criminal science from Sam Houston State University.

A former law enforcement officer, Miles owns the third-largest -- and most successful-- African-American independent insurance agency in the United States and the number one black-owned agency in Texas.

Started as a one-man operation in his garage apartment, today his company, Borris L. Miles Insurance, writes more than $56 million dollars in insurance premiums annually.

Miles' office is located in Houston's Third Ward on Almeda.
