MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is issuing a warning to the public regarding a scam that has surfaced locally.

The scam involves a caller claiming to be a representative from the Internal Revenue Service. The caller advises the potential victim he or she owes money or that they have a refund due. The caller then tries to trick the individual into providing personal or financial information. The IRS will not:

Call to demand immediate payment.

Call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a notification.

Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid card.

Ask for credit card, debit card, or financial information over the phone.

Threaten to bring local law enforcement or other law enforcement groups to have you arrested for not making immediate payment.
