Man dies after running in Krispy Kreme Challenge
RALEIGH, NC -- An official with the Krispy Kreme Challenge said a 58-year-old man died after running in the event.
He stepped out of the race within the first mile and reported having chest pains, race officials say. The man, who was not identified, was taken by EMS to Rex Hospital where he died.
"On behalf of the entire N.C. State community, our deepest sympathies go out to the runner's family members and loved ones," said Brad Bohlander, a university spokesperson.
Many viewers reached out on the ABC11 Facebook page to express their condolences or memories of the man who died. One viewer said the man "was an awesome guy and retired military. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't share a laugh with him. Definitely going to be missed. It was an honor to know you."
Another viewer described him as "a very sweet and kind man... and we'll miss him very much."
The Krispy Kreme Challenge is a student-led, charity-based run managed by Park Scholars at N.C. State University. All proceeds benefit the UNC Children's Hospital.
