HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A night out at a party turned violent for a man returning to his home just before 2:00am this morning.

Police say the 20-year-old man was beaten with a pistol when he returned to his home on Champion Drive. The victim was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he is expected to recover.

"He was approached by an individual who came up to his vehicle," Constable Mark Herman said, "There was a physical altercation, and at some point during the altercation, there was a gunshot that was fired."

Doctors determined the victim was not shot, but he was severely beaten.

Neighbors said this kind of violence is unusual.

"It's nerve-wrecking because I have a lot of kids," Eric Smith said. "They're older, so they come home late at night."

Constable Herman said the suspect left his pistol behind. He also says the victim recognized the suspect. Herman is confident he and Harris County Sheriff's Office Investigators will locate the person responsible.

Eyewitness News spoke with the victim's father. He declined an interview, but said he is grateful his son survived this ordeal. He expects his son to be discharged from the hospital later this afternoon.
