HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston city council approved body cams for HPD officers today.

The vote was 11-4 in favor of the cams.

The cams will be deployed over the next 12 to 18 months, beginning with officers in the Central Patrol division. It will start in the next 90 days, according to John Cannon with HPD.

They will be deployed to around 4,000 officers. You can read more about the body cams in the Houston City Council agenda.

Late last year, Harris County DA Devon Anderson approved $1.9M for HPD and the Harris County Sheriff's Office to be outfitted with the cams.
