High school football player dies after being injured at practice

Police on Long Island are investigating the death of a teenager during an off-season high school football workout, Suffolk County Police have confirmed.

Joshua Mileto, 16, was injured during a strength and conditioning camp this morning at Sachem East High School in Farmingville, New York, according to police.

"A group of athletes were performing a drill carrying a log overhead when the log fell and struck Joshua Mileto, a student at the school, in the head," police said in a statement.

The teen was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Graham said in a statement this afternoon that the district is "devastated by this horrific accident."

Graham said Mileto was in the 11th grade. Police initially reported Mileto's age as 15 years old but later clarified that he was 16.

"Words cannot express the grief we feel as a school community," Graham added. "We extend our deepest condolences to the student's family and friends during this terribly difficult time."
