HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Detectives are investigating a shooting that happened in the middle of a busy roadway in northwest Harris County.

SkyEye HD was over the scene as several police cars surrounded two vehicles at the intersection of FM 529 and North Eldridge Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say a 27-year-old man driving a brown Toyota van pulled in front of a 32-year-old man in a black Mercedes, got out and smashed the window of the Mercedes. As he ran back to his van, the driver of the Mercedes stepped out of the car and opened fire, striking the other man twice in the back.

"We seen them arguing and all of a sudden we hear boom, boom, boom, boom, boom! And we're like what in the world. So I lean out the window and, 'I'm like Oh my God we seen what was going on,'" witness Isaac Alfred said.

Alfred and his mother-in-law were in the next lane. They, along with a few other folks stopped to help.

"He pulled over, jumped out the car, ran over there, traffic is coming - he could've gotten hit - ran back over, got a blanket for him," said Ashley Skrong, whose boyfriend Tyler Unverzagt jumped in to help.

The victim was transported via LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he's believed to be in good condition.

Investigators are still trying to determine what instigated the confrontation. Both men are Sikh, but detectives say they're still trying to figure out if they knew each other.

One of the shooter's relatives tells abc13 the two knew each other, and that he'd done some work for the victim but hadn't been paid. She doesn't know if this altercation started as a result of that. She says the shooter is not the kind of guy to just go off and shoot anyone and that he had to have been provoked.

This case will be turned over to a grand jury to determine whether charges will be filed.
