Funeral today for central Texas teen swept away by floodwaters

DEVINE, TX (KTRK) -- Funeral services are being held today for a popular high school senior who was killed in flood waters in central Texas.

Alyssa Ramirez was returning home from her high school prom Saturday night when her car was swept away by floodwaters in the small town of Devine, which is southwest of San Antonio.

The Devine High School senior was just a few miles away from her home when her vehicle became stuck in the high water. The 18-year-old then called 911 and her father. Her father tried to reach her, but by the time he arrived, the car had overturned and been carried off.

"She did the right things," Alyssa's aunt Roberta Ramirez told WOAI-TV. "She called 911. She called her father, but it was just too much and too quick."

Alyssa's body was found the following morning.

Alyssa Ramirez's aunt, Roberta Ramirez, described her niece as a "fun-loving, caring" young woman who was "centered." At her school, she was the student council president and homecoming queen. She also played volleyball and tennis and was a youth leader at her church. She had hoped to study optometry at the San Antonio campus of the University of Texas.
