Fresno man loses his ability to work and is fighting to get his life back

FRESNO, CA -- A Fresno man is fighting to support his family after an accident took away his ability to work.

On July 18th, Jason Collins was riding his motorcycle to his new job as a mechanic at Fold-Pak when he says, an intoxicated driver ran a stop light and hit him. "They didn't think I was gonna make it," Collins added, "I was living minute by minute."

He was in a coma for six weeks with his wife Brandi by his side. He had broken bones, a pierced lung, a fractured spine, a cracked skull and when he woke up, his leg was gone. "It was his life or his leg and I knew he was strong enough to come back," Brandi said.

Collins is still struggling and unable to go back to work. He says the bills are piling up, he has a mortgage and 3 kids to support. "My family counts on me so I have to be as productive as I can."

The problem is, insurance won't pay for a prosthetic leg and he can't do his job without the ability to stand on two feet. Disability, he said, is not an option either. "If there's one thing any of us want for Christmas it's dad and my husband to get a leg," His wife Brandi said.

It's a time of need at a time when many are willing to give and there are two ways to help. The family set up a Gofundme and a Generosity account to raise money to buy the prosthetic leg. The goal is $24,000. Brandi said, "You never know how strong you can be until you have to be."

"I beat death," Collins added, "I just need a leg so I can get my life back."
