HOUSTON (KTRK) -- If you are flying to Florida today, you might want to check with your airline about your departure.

Eight flights so far have been cancelled today at Bush Intercontinental Airport as Hurricane Matthew takes aim at Florida.

Miami International Airport will halt operations at noon today, while the airport in Fort Lauderdale says it is closing at 10:30am EST until the storms pass and the airport can safely welcome passengers.

More than 2,500 flights to Florida have been cancelled over the next two days at airports across the country. Most of these flights were scheduled to arrive in Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

About 500 flights to Orlando have been cancelled for tomorrow so far.

Typically, runways shut down when crosswinds reach higher than 30 miles per hour.

Travelers will want to check with their airlines to see how and when flights will be rescheduled.
