EXCLUSIVE: Behind the scenes of Fort Hood sniper training
FORT HOOD, TX (KTRK) -- Police departments all over our country are using military-style training, so we traveled to Fort Hood, the largest active duty armored post in the United States Armed Services, to learn more.
"It's 90% mental and 10% physical strength," explained Pfc. Devin Don Anthony Poole. "It makes a lot of sense because if your mental psyche isn't straight, there's no way you're going to be able to physically do whatever you have to do."
Pfc Poole is one of several men training as a sniper at Fort Hood. He's only 20 years old, not even old enough to drink.
"I tend to sing a lot to myself so if I really get off-track or anxious or nervous, or just frustrated," he explained, "I'll sing to myself so it helps me focus out."
He's training for overseas combat, but police today use many of the same tactics.
On Memorial Day weekend, an HPD sniper took down Dionisio Garza, who's accused of shooting seven people, killing one of them.

Police say Garza fired 212 shots before he was killed.
"People are capable of so much, and they're so unpredictable," Pfc. Poole said. "Who you kind of just hope for the best and go off your training."
