HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A deputy rescued a woman from a dog attack this afternoon, but she had to kill the dog in order to save the victim.

According to animal control, the victim was collecting cans along the East Freeway near Uvalde at about noon when she was attacked by at least one, and possibly two, stray dogs. A Harris County Sheriff's deputy happened to be driving by and witnessed the attack.

Some other witnesses were trying unsuccessfully to separate the dogs from the woman. The deputy told the others to stand back, then shot and killed the dog.

The woman was taken to East Houston Regional Medical Center. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Animal control took custody the dogs.
