Couple killed while sitting in car in southeast Houston
Police identifed the victims as Yvette Rodriguez, 26, and David Chavez, 24.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A man and woman are dead after someone opened fire on them while they were sitting in their car.

Neighbors reported hearing about five gunshots around 10:30pm Monday. It happened outside a home in the 6100 block of Edinburg near Westover in southeast Houston.

Police identified the victims as Yvette Rodriguez, 26, and David Chavez, 24. An officer told Eyewitness News the young woman had a big family, so the couple went outside and sat in the car for some privacy.

"We are just in shock because she doesn't live that lifestyle, crazy. She's a mom. She worked," said Rodriguez friend Alyssa Farrera.

Barrera said Yvette had two girls, ages 3 and 7, from a previous relationship. A neighbor said the young woman's mother had a heart attack after hearing the news of her daughter's death.

"This time, it hit her pretty hard," said Javier Rodriguez, the father of the deceased woman. "We're just taking it, everyone is crushed. We are just taking it day by day."

According to Rodriguez' co-workers, she left Hartz Chicken Buffet after her shift ended at 9:45pm. Chavez picked her up, and they drove to her home. They sat in their vehicle and police said at 10:40pm someone began shooting them.

"We are working and at the same time it's just hard because there's so many memories of her in there. It's tough. It's something you don't expect," said co-worker Gloria Hernandez.

Houston police have not yet identified any suspects, and they say no witnesses have come forward. Anyone with information can do so anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
