Community raises money for Church's Chicken burn victims
Family members in Livingston came together to help support three burn victims, who are still in critical condition after an accident on August 1.

LIVINGSTON, TX (KTRK) -- The road to recovery for three victims is full of caring people, from Livingston to the Medical Center in Houston, where Violeta Damian is getting used to visiting her big sister. Damian said, "I like to tell her jokes so she can laugh. I still do that in the hospital so she'll be better."

At the VFW in Livingston, the rain didn't stop for hours, but neither did the effort to help the families of Erica Acevedo, Montserrat Damian and Hugolina Guerrero.

Fundraiser organizer Claudia Moreno said, "I just want every family member to know they aren't alone, we're here for them and we hope for them to recover real soon."

The women were severely burned August 1 while working at a Church's Chicken in Livingston. The floor collapsed in an unexplained accident. Chicken fryers with grease poured into a three- to four-foot deep hole as the victims were trapped underneath.

Oscar Castro, brother-in-law of Damian said, "A lot of help. It means a lot to help us like this." Their burns will require a lot of care and medical bills. Castro added, "I hope God will help us with this and she's going to be doing fine."

Their families are hopeful they can celebrate a day they are released from the hospital. "I'm praying to God to help her get out of the hospital so we can go somewhere she likes to go," said Damian.

A fund has also been set up at First State Bank called Church's Burn Victims.
