It's official. The City of Houston's 2006 plan to give everyone a 96-gallon roll-to-the-curb recycling cart is finally complete.

On Tuesday (Sept. 17), the Houston City Council voted unanimously to approve $5,011,250 to purchase 95,000 recycling bins. The bins are scheduled to be delivered between the end of November and the beginning of January and come with a 10-warranty. Purchased via a cooperative agreement with the City of Tuscon from Toter, LLC, they bring the total number of recycling bins in the city to approximately 367,000.

According to Lauren Laake, Chief of Staff for Council Member Dave Martin, the carts will be provided free to residents, who can choose to opt out of the recycling program altogether.
