Several murder cases in jeopardy over crime-scene mistakes

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- An audit by the Houston Forensic Science Center identified 65 cases with errors made by a Houston Police Department officer.

Of those 65 identified, 26 are homicide cases.

The news is very concerning for victims' families who are seeking justice for their loved ones.

Emily Torrez said her brother, Daniel Trevino, was murdered in November 2015. She said her husband was robbed in their Sunnyside apartment complex parking lot.

After hearing commotion in the parking lot, Trevino went to help his loved one. He was shot and killed.

Torrez said the case is still unsolved.

Making it worse, the family learned it was one of the 65 cases listed as having some sort of error. Specifically, the audit said a bloody shoe print wasn't processed and pictures weren't taken of a bent window at the scene.

For Torrez, hearing the news was like reliving the ordeal all over again.

"This is horrible. They need to get this done," said Torrez.

Latoya Coleman is also concerned. Her longtime boyfriend, Edmond Ford, was killed in November.

According to police, Ford was shot by a masked man. Coleman said the suspect, or suspects, are still at large.

Ford's case is also on the list of cases that had an error.

"My concern is if it makes it to court, it could get thrown out," added Coleman.
