Bergdahl faces charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.

In 2009, he disappeared from his army outpost in Afghanistan. He was then held captive by the Taliban for five years.

He was released in a prisoner exchange for five Guantanamo Bay detainees in 2014.

Some in the military have said his solders took great risks to search for him.

Tuesday's hearing comes before his expected court-martial scheduled for early August.

If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison for desertion and life in prison on the misbehavior charge.
