Investigators are trying to piece together what led to the deadly shooting Tuesday

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Police are investigating after a young child was fatally shot in Katy Tuesday morning.

That four-year-old boy was taken to Cy Fair Medical Center but doctors couldn't save him. He died from a gunshot wound to the head, which he suffered at home on Cypress Arbor Court home in Katy.

"The child was found in the home," said Lt. Joe Ambriz with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "There were two other children in the home -- a 2-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy. The mother was outside at the time."

Police say the mom was outside smoking and the kids were alone in the house when the gunshot went off. Police believe the shooting was accidental. Now, they're investigating who pulled the trigger.

A neighbor who lives directly behind them says he heard the gunshot.

"I was getting dressed and I heard a gunshot go off," said Hunter Fuller. "So I looked out my back window because I can see it and I just looked and I saw a little kid just lying there."

Neighbors across the street say they have always liked the family.

"They're real good people," said neighbor Edwin Gomez. "Calm, humble, nice; you know what I'm saying? Any neighborhood would want them."

"It's pretty sad because I know the little boy and he's autistic and I have a four-year-old, too, and I couldn't imagine that," added neighbor Hayley Maciel.

We did see police place some sort of bag on the six-year-old brother's hands as well as the mom's hands before they were taken away for questioning. Police say that is to preserve possible evidence, like gunpowder residue.
