A 24-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot Saturday afternoon by police officers in southwest Houston.

According to police, officers were responding to a call of a man waving a gun at people around 2 p.m. in the parking lot of a Fiesta near Bissonnet and Southwest Freeway.

Officers arrived and didn't immediately see the suspect. Then soon after, they spotted him down the road on the sidewalk.

HPD Chief Art Acevedo said after officers approached the 24-year-old suspect, he started to bring his gun toward an officer.

The officer, who has been with the department for two years, fired several rounds.

"We don't know exactly what this person's motivation was," Acevedo said.

The suspect was taken to Ben Taub Hospital.

No officers were injured.
An investigation is ongoing.
