Unloaded gun found inside elementary student's backpack
Parents expressed concern after a gun was found inside a student's backpack at McNamara Elementary.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston ISD officials said an unloaded gun was found inside an elementary student's backpack Monday in southwest Houston.

Staff at McNamara Elementary School found the weapon and called HISD police.

Officers took the weapon from the student's bag and parents of the student were notified with the following letter:

McNamara Elementary School Parents:

Though no students were harmed, I need to make you aware of an incident that occurred today on our campus.

This morning, a teacher found an unloaded handgun in a student's backpack. We immediately notified the HISD police officer stationed on our campus, detained the student and confiscated the weapon. I want to assure you that proper disciplinary action is being taken, as outlined in the HISD Code of Student Conduct.

Please know that we take these situations very seriously, as the safety of our students and staff at McNamara is always our absolute top priority. We are vigilant and have a strong monitoring system in place, which allows us to keep careful watch over our students and be on the lookout for signs of potentially dangerous behavior.

I encourage you to be vigilant at home, as well. Please take this opportunity to talk with your children about the dangers of guns and why they should not be brought to school, and remind them about the importance of reporting unsafe behavior and objects.

HISD officials said no one was injured after a gun was found inside a student's backpack at McNamara Elementary.

HISD said there were no injuries, and the student faces discipline for bringing the gun to school.

The district released this statement this afternoon:

McNamara Elementary Schools officials discovered an unloaded gun in a student's backpack on Monday. Staff immediately notified HISD Police, detained the student, and confiscated the weapon. Thankfully, no students were harmed. Parents were notified, and the student who brought the gun to school is being disciplined per the HISD Code of Conduct. The safety of students and staff remains HISD's top priority.
