HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston Texans defensive players J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus have been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Watt suffered a tibial plateau fracture in Sunday night's loss to Kansas City and Mercilus was ruled out with a torn pectoral muscle.

Dr. Patrick McCulloch, an orthopedic surgeon for Houston Methodist Hospital, explained how big Watt's injury is.

Texans DE J.J. Watt suffered a tibial plateau fracture in his left leg during the first quarter of Sunday night's game.

He also described Mercilus' pectoral tear.

'What can happen in football if you are trying to get around offensive lineman and your arm gets pulled back in this position," McCulloch said.
