METRO adds new safety feature to light rail crossings

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- METRO is testing new technology to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe at rail crossings. It's called Bluetooth Pedestrian Alert System or BPAS.

When a train is approaching, the system uses bluetooth technology to alert nearby pedestrians at crosswalks with an audible message: "caution METRORail approaching."

BPAS is being installed at the intersections of Main Street at Lamar and Fannin at Sunset.

METRO is making additional safety improvements with new fencing, warning signs and painting crosswalks red.
