A Houston mass shooting survivor describes what goes through your mind when you are caught in the crosshairs.

So what's it like to be in the middle of a mass shooting?

Almost a year ago to the day, 10 people were injured when a man, armed with a gun and wearing a replica World War II German SS uniform, opened fire on drivers in southwest Houston.

Nathan Desai, 49, was shot to death by police before he was able to access more weapons and ammunition from his car nearby.

Among the injured was Alan Wakim. Glass and metal from his windshield hit him in the face and eyes after bullets shattered it into pieces.

He tells Eyewitness News while he doesn't dwell on the shooting, he thinks about it everyday and says the first few moments for most people are the most dangerous.

"You don't know where it's coming from. You don't know you're being shot at. You don't know where to go," said Wakim. "As a civilian, you don't expect something like that to happen."

He can relate to the images coming out of Las Vegas and understands why some videos show concertgoers hesitate through the first gunshots. The sound of helicopters still gets to him.

He pointed out the trees Desai, a troubled lawyer, used for cover as he walked down the sidewalk on Law Street near Weslayan.

"They still have bullet holes," he said. "I see them every day."

Wakim's advice to anyone caught in a similar situation is to immediately start moving. He hopes no one ever has to use it.

"The last thing you want to do is sit there and get confirmation with a round hitting your body. It's something I wouldn't wish on anybody."
