MESQUITE, Texas (KTRK) -- It's been a while since Stephen Paddock's family lived in Mesquite, Texas.

His former neighbors are not able to add much to the mystery of why the 63-year-old went on the deadliest shooting rampage in modern American history.

"The one they showed on TV, he does not come here too often," said neighbor George Huertas .

Huertas has not seen anyone from the Paddock family for at least five years.

Paddock's mother lived next door, but Huertas says he rarely saw the man who caused so much carnage in Las Vegas and rarely spoke to him.

Neighbor Maria Almeida saw Paddock's mother from time to time and occasionally saw the elderly woman's sons at the home.

She says the family mostly kept to themselves.

"I would see two men come and visit her and I guess one of them was him, but we never did really, I never talked to her," said Almeida.

Almeida was shocked to hear what happened in Las Vegas.

"I just can't believe it, it's so close to home that somebody could do something like that and just live a normal life and his mom lived right there," said Almeida.

The gunman's former neighbors in Reno said Paddock never made eye contact, never spoke and seemed to avoid people.

Those who knew the family are surprised at the violence caused by someone they lived next to for years.

In a strange twist, Mr. Huertas stayed at Mandalay Bay last week, in fact his room was two floors above where Paddock committed his savage acts.
