Off-duty deputy constable struck by hit-and-run driver while checking crash damage
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- An off-duty deputy constable involved in a car crash on Eastex Freeway was struck by another vehicle when he got out to check the damage, according to authorities.
The original crash happened just after 12:30 a.m. Friday on the southbound freeway near the exit to Hopper Road.
According to the Harris County Precinct 4 constable, the off-duty law enforcement officer crashed his private vehicle, a black Dodge Charger, in the area. When he got out of his car, another vehicle struck the deputy and drove away from the scene.
Investigators were also looking into the possibility of a second vehicle hitting the deputy.
The deputy was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Another person inside the deputy's car was not injured in the crash.
A description of the hit-and-run vehicle was not immediately available.
This marks the 2nd incident in which a member of law enforcement in the Houston area was struck while out on the roadway. Officer Nestor Garcia, of Houston Police Department, was critically injured after a vehicle plowed through a traffic stop earlier this week along Southwest Freeway.
