Mom: 10-year-old ate pot brownies at school
A mother in Modesto says her daughter was sickened after eating a pot brownie at school.

MODESTO, California (KTRK) -- A California mother says her 10-year-old daughter was given a brownie laced with marijuana by a classmate at school.

This isn't the only case of the drug-laced dessert, according to school officials, who admitted to other related incidents within the district.

Kari Watkins said she was shocked to learn that her daughter and other students may have eaten the pot brownies during the school day at Beard Elementary School.

"I'm furious. I'm heartbroken 'cause that somewhat steals the innocence of my 10-year-old child," Watkins said.

The principal called Watkins and told her about the incident before she picked her up from the after-school program.

She claims her daughter was acting differently, and that she complained of a stomach ache.

Her daughter said a boy at school gave her the brownie, not having any clue it might have contained drugs.

"She told me, 'It didn't taste right, mom, so I spit it out,'" Watkins said.

School officials in Modesto said they are investigating after a similar incident, in which a high school student was rushed to the hospital after falling ill.

The district did not say how many students may have eaten the drugged brownies.
