Mannequin used in Las Vegas double murder case displayed in museum
LAS VEGAS, Nevada (KTRK) -- The brutal murders of two homeless men in Las Vegas were becoming cold cases until the police department came up with a unique approach that caught national attention.
Daniel Adalpe and Dave Dunn were killed sleeping on the streets earlier this year. To solve the crime, the Las Vegas Metro Police Department came up with an idea involving a mannequin.
"It was just really about an idea. What can we do to prevent the next murder?" Capt. Andy Walsh told KSNV.
Investigators used a mannequin to make it look like someone was sleeping outside a museum. They spent hours watching the dummy and eventually, the unthinkable happened.
Officers caught Shane Schindler beating the mannequin with a hammer. They quickly moved in and arrested him.
That same mannequin was being displayed at the Mob Museum Tuesday night where people were able to ask investigators and prosecutors questions about the case.
"This has all the elements of an interesting law enforcement story," Geoff Schumacher, Sr. Director of Content, Mob Museum said.
Prosecutors dropped murder charges against Schindler as part of a plea deal, but he ended up pleading guilty to attempted murder and was sentenced to eight to 20 years in prison in August.
