Flood victims leaving GRB take big step towards recovery

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Nearly a month after moving in to the George R. Brown Convention Center, flood victims from Harvey are about to find a new home.

About 1,000 evacuees remain at the Red Cross shelter downtown, but this weekend they are set to find more long-term or permanent housing.

With the help of FEMA, Harvey victims are taking aid they have received and will find apartment or dormitory-style housing.

The Red Cross said these families and individuals come from different backgrounds, and therefore have different levels of assistance.

Some of the shelter's residents will move into completely government-subsidized housing. Others are working with local officials and the Houston Apartment Association to sign leases and move into new apartments.

The shelter opened on August 22, so you can imagine how anxious residents are to get on with their lives.

Officials with the Red Cross said by 5 p.m., they hope to have shelter residents on buses and moving towards the next step of the recovery process.
