No threat to public from Mont Belvieu plant fire
Authorities say an industrial plant fire in Mont Belvieu poses no threat to the public.

MONT BELVIEU, Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities say there is no threat to the public as a fire at a Mont Belvieu industrial plant burns out.

An explosion and subsequent fire rocked a brine pit at the Enterprise Products facility on Friday evening around 7:30 p.m., according to Rick Rainey with Enterprise Products.

An hour later, authorities said the fire was fully contained and close to being tapped out. Nobody was injured, according to the Chambers County Sheriff's Office.

It's not yet clear what caused the incident, and plant officials have yet to determine exactly what was burning. Rainey said all of the substances at the plant can be described as "general natural gas liquids." At the site of the fire, saltwater is injected into caverns to get natural gas and oil out.

"We have no details in what might have happened to cause the fire," said Rainey, who added it had no relation to Harvey. "We only had minor damage, high water. We've been back up for over a week now."

At no point did the Mont Belvieu Office of Emergency Management issue any evacuation or shelter-in-place orders.

Before nightfall, flames and a large plume of smoke were visible from I-10 at 146.
