Must watch college football games: Week 2
It was a rough week for many Texas teams last week, but can they find redemption this week and which games may already have playoff implications?
TEXAS TEAMS
Houston vs Arizona- 9:30 p.m. on ESPN
After postponing their season opener due to Hurricane Harvey, the Cougars will start their season with a tough test, Arizona.
This will be the first game with Major Applewhite at the helm and that has made it difficult for Arizona to prepare. Arizona also doesn't know which quarterback they'll be facing. Either Kyle Postma or Kyle Allen will fill Greg Ward's shoes. Postma was the backup for Ward the two successful seasons and Allen is a former Texas A&M starter and big-time high school recruit who sat out last season as a redshirt.
No 23 TCU vs Arkansas- 2:30 p.m.
The Horned Frogs are the only Texas representative in the top 25. Last week, TCU and unranked Arkansas both opened the season with easy victories over lower-tier opponents.
TCU will be looking for revenge for last season's overtime loss in Fort Worth.
Another former Texas A&M quarterback is in play here. TCU quarterback Kenny Hill told reporters he's hoping to "change the narrative" on him and is dropping the nickname "Kenny Trill." The key to this game will be the success or failure of Hill.
Texas vs San Jose State - 2:30 p.m.University of Houston's former coach, Tom Herman, faces an easy week after a disappointing loss to Maryland last week. This will make for a nice break before facing currently ranked number 6, USC.
Texas A&M vs Nicholls State- 6 p.m. on ESPNU
Texas A&M lost to UCLA after 35 unanswered points late in game. This was the second largest comeback in college football history, but unfortunately the Aggies were the antagonists in this inspirational sports movie in the making. They should have an easy week to recover.
Baylor vs UTSA- 7 p.m.
Another new coach in Texas started the season with disappointment. Baylor allowed an astonishing 585 yards and 48 points to an FCS opponent in the first game of the Matt Rhule era in Waco.
If the Bears take this weekend's opponent lightly, they'll be in for another long game. Hurricane Harvey postponed the Roadrunner's first game against Houston and after seeing Baylor's loss they may be looking to start their season with an upset.
The Roadrunners appear better than Liberty on both sides of the ball and still rank above them on Sagarin Ratings even after the upset.
Rice vs UTEP- 7 p.m.
Both of these are coming off blowout losses in their season opener against ranked teams. This will be the first Conference USA game of the season and therefore the stakes are higher than usual this early in the season.
OUTSIDE TEXAS
No. 13 Auburn vs No. 3 Clemson- 6 p.m. ESPN
It's a tiger showdown! The ACC tigers and the SEC tigers are battling for this game, a spot in the playoffs and recruits. This will be the first big test for defending champions and number 13 Auburn as well.
No. 5 Oklahoma vs No. 2 Ohio State- 6:30 p.m. on ABC13
This Saturday these two teams will share a football field for only the fourth time. Oklahoma will have a chance for revenge for last year's crushing defeat 45-24. It may seem too early in the season to start talking about the College Football Playoff, but the winner of this game will certainly have a leg up in the race once it gets underway.
