Woman's rendition of 'Amazing Grace' at Houston City Council meeting brings people to tears

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- We've seen dozens of touching and heartwarming moments throughout Hurricane Harvey and even after, and this particular one that happened at Houston's City Council meeting brought some members to tears.

Vawn Gretta is a graduate of the University of St. Thomas and a mother of three. She and her family have been displaced from her Friendswood home as a result of the storm.

She was invited to sing "Amazing Grace" at the meeting Wednesday before it started.

Her rendition of the classic song was so beautiful, it brought many people in the council chambers to tears.

Gretta received a standing ovation and Mayor Sylvester Turner thanked her and said it was perfect timing, given the circumstances.

Gretta thanked her vocal professor, Jolie Rocke Brown, for preparing her for the opportunity. She said that Dr. Brady Knapp, another vocal professor, invited her to sing at a gathering in July which led to her being invited to sing at the council meeting.

She went on to thank others in a Facebook post:

"Most importantly the grace of God for choosing me. I'm just in awe and tears at the handy work of the most high. Truly thankful and honored for this incredible moment. Last but not least, Councilman David W. Robinson, thank you so much and thank for outstanding staff. You are truly what any citizen would hope for and desire in leadership. May God continue to bless your steps and give you the desires of your heart," Gretta wrote.
