Pres. Trump embarks on tour of Texas in wake of Harvey

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (KTRK) -- President Donald Trump plans to visit Corpus Christi today in a tour of the damage left behind by Harvey, which still impacts a superfluously waterlogged southeast Texas.

Harvey arrived on the central Texas coast last Friday as a Category 4 hurricane, packing maximum sustained winds of 135 mph while pounding coastal and inland towns like Rockport, Port Lavaca and Victoria. At least one death in that part of Texas is tied to the landfall.

The downgraded storm then dropped torrential rain over an area that includes Houston, sending rainfall totals so far into the 40-inch territory. At least a foot of rain is expected to fall for another consecutive day of rain today.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump plan to tour the devastation and assess the federal response on the Texas Gulf Coast. They are expected to also meet with local leaders and organizations handling the relief before heading to Austin for tour of the Department of Public Safety emergency operations center.

On Monday, the White House assured Congress that the $3 billion balance in the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster fund was enough to handle immediate needs, such as debris removal and temporary shelter for displaced residents.
