CYPRESS, Texas (KTRK) -- It was a big day for Kevin Will Jr. It was his first day of kindergarten.

With his mom and grandmother by his side he was ready to go but one very important person was missing- Kevin's dad.

That's why a sea of police officers were there for him.

More than 100 officers showed up to walk little Kevin to Wildwood Elementary School.

Kevin's dad, Officer Kevin Will, was hit and killed by a drunk driver six years ago. He died two months before his son Kevin was born.

"He'd like to have his dad here, but he's unfortunately not. So this is the second best thing and he's come to know them as a part of his family," said Cyndee Herring, Kevin Jr.'s grandmother.

Officer Don Egdorf was there the night of the accident and arrested the drunk driver. He testified at the trial and now he's here for Kevin Jr.

"Trying to do something to make sure that Kevin Jr. gets what he needs and has the support that he needs," said Officer Egdorf.

It was all a little overwhelming for the 5-year-old and his mom.

"I don't know, it's awesome, it's sad," said Alicia Will, Kevin Jr.'s mother.

But this group has become a family. These officers say they'll be here for Kevin not just today but every day.
