2 suspects at large after shooting TSU student near campus, police say

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A short walk to the convenience store almost turned deadly for a Texas Southern University student.

It happened just after midnight Thursday, just steps away from his Tierwester Oaks apartment. Police said two men tried to rob him, shot him in the shoulder, and took his phone.

"We heard the gunshot, at first we didn't know, we weren't sure if it was a gunshot or not," said Chandler Chatman, who also lives in the complex. "We walked inside and people started coming out."

The 22-year-old student was transported to Ben Taub Hospital, where he is expected to recover. The shooting was not technically on the TSU campus. However, many TSU police officers combed the crime scene along Blodgett near Scott Street, looking for evidence.

"It's scary -- like I walk all the time, I don't have a car, and I know a ton of TSU people who walk," said Kaitlin Dale, who was inside the convenience store when the shooting happened.

The shooting surprised convenience store employees because it is frequented by police who often stop in to buy drinks while out on patrol.

"I'm surprised about it because usually, this area is extremely heavy with police, all the area have police every second," said Tiger Williams, who works at the store.

But the student was attacked just steps away from the bright lights of the convenience store, away from its high definition surveillence cameras. And now the search for two suspects continues.
