Growing number of medical patients using Uber or Lyft for trips to the ER
LOS ANGELES, California (KTRK) -- If you needed to go to the emergency room, how would you prefer to get there? You would think that an ambulance would be the best option, but in Los Angeles, a growing number of people are using ride-sharing apps.
Some riders think that Uber and Lyft are better during emergencies because they can pick the hospital and save money in the process. But medical experts say it could backfire because not all hospitals provide the same type of care.
"If you go to the wrong hospital because of self transport or Uber or Lyft, that hospital will then call 911," Los Angeles Medical Director Dr. Mark Eckstein told KMOV.
He said it's likely you would be put in an ambulance eventually and be taken to another hospital that can help your specific medical needs.

Some riders say the issue is money. The average cost in an ambulance can run anywhere from a few couple hundred dollars up to $1,700. That could all go up or down, depending on insurance.
"We're grateful our service has helped people get to where they're going when they need it most. However, it's important to note that Uber is not a substitute for law enforcement or medical professionals. In the event of any medical emergency, we encourage people to call 911," Uber said in a statement.
If it's a life or death situation, it is always recommended to dial 9-1-1.
