Woman found nearly naked on street claims she is mermaid

FRESNO, California (KTRK) -- Police in California need help identifying a woman who claims to be a mythical creature.

The woman claims she is a mermaid. The nearly naked woman was found by a casino in Fresno County around 3 a.m. walking in the middle of the road.

"She was wet. She said she had been in the lake, said she needed help and needed to be taken to the hospital," Fresno Police Lt. Mark Hudson told KGPE.

The driver took the woman to Saint Agnes Hospital to get evaluated. When police questioned her, she told them her name was "Joanna" and that she didn't know how she ended up there.

"We did go through records after fingerprinting her and we still did not come up with her identity," Hudson said.

Police said the woman has webbed toes on both feet. The woman is 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. Police believe she could be between 17 and 20 years old.

Fresno police said she is safe and hope someone who knows her will call them.

"We're trying to piece together information to try and identify this person," Hudson said.
