PEARLAND, TX (KTRK) -- A high school senior is hoping to be elected as one of the district's youngest trustees on the school board.

Mike Floyd, 18, is running for position two in Pearland Independent School District.

His first engagement with politics was in the fourth grade when he was 13. He started working on congressional campaigns. From there, he interned with state representatives and shadowed judges. Now, he's hoping to take those experiences to help the district and the student body.

"As a student, I know a lot about this district. I've been in this district for 13 years now. And I know about a whole lot, what goes on inside the classrooms, what goes on inside the campuses and the hallways," Floyd said. "And I think right now, there's a big disconnect between what's going on on the school board level and what's actually happening in terms of how the policies are implemented in our classrooms."

The positin Floyd is going for is a three-year term. April 24 is the first day of early voting, with Election Day falling on May 6.
