TOMBALL, TX (KTRK) --A 14-year-old battling a rare cancer got his wish to join the Tomball Police Department. Nathan McGarrett has dreamed of a career in law enforcement for as long as he can remember and the officers in Tomball made his dream a reality last week.
Nathan was diagnosed with Pleomorphic Liposarcoma shortly after his 13th birthday. Pleomorphic Liposarcoma is a very rare and aggressive cancer of the fatty tissues of the extremities. Nathan said his main oncologist told him the cancer is so rare it has only been diagnosed in 57 people.
"I am actually the 57th person to have it," said Nathan. "When my doctor told me that it inspired my family and I to create #Team57."
Nathan is currently undergoing radiation and his second cycle of chemotherapy treatment. He's had two surgeries in cerebellum and has had several tumors removed around his knee. However, Nathan is a fighter.
"I can't believe how brave he is," wrote Nathan's dad, Steve, on his Facebook page. "He's handling all of this with a good strong attitude."
Nathan's optimistic disposition is what grabbed the attention of the Tomball Police Department. When officers heard Nathan was in the process of fulfilling several items on his "wish list," they welcomed him with open arms into their family of blue.
"It was a really special day," said Nathan.
The Tomball Police Department took Nathan on a ride along and arranged for a Texas Ranger to visit with Nathan during his day at the department.
"They had a Texas Ranger give me a challenge coin and a challenge patch," said Nathan.
Nathan was surprised to receive both items and told ABC13 it was a huge honor.
"Shout-out to Tomball PD," said Nathan.
Nathan had one more big wish fulfilled. He had the opportunity to meet actor Keanu Reeves.
Nathan's family has created a Facebook page for updates on his condition and you can join the #Team57 GoFundMe page here.
