New movement emphasizes healthy beauty products

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- There's been a lot of talk over the past few years about clean eating. These healthier foods are usually pesticide and hormone free. Well, if it's important to pay attention to what we put on the inside of our bodies, what about what we apply to the outside of our bodies?

The new trend in clean is called 'clean beauty'. Gwyneth Paltrow has a book out about it, and it's become a movement in the beauty industry gaining momentum as more Americans pay attention to the ingredients in their skin care products.

Erin Magana is a Nurse and Founder of the mobile aesthetics company, Oomph. She says we should be watching everything we put on our skin, especially if we love the fragrance.

"The FDA doesn't have any authority to require disclosure of what are actually in fragrance," says Magana. She adds, "I could take potato chips, orange paint, and basil, and that's a fragrance."

Magana says the FDA isn't regulating much.

"They had 11 ingredients in our cosmetics that they were willing to acknowledge that they could be harmful. Europe and Canada have over 1,000," says Magana.

So, Magana came up with some clean swaps to replace dirty products most of us use on a daily basis.

"Clean means it's free of carcinogens, that it does not disrupt your hormones," adds Magana.

One of the most dangerous products is deodorant.

"Most deodorants contain aluminum, and there has been a huge increase in the rate of breast cancer since deodorant with aluminum was introduced," Magana explains.

Magana says a clean alternative is Schmidt's deodorant.

"It's free of toxic chemicals, it's all natural," she adds.

Body wash is another dirty product. It contains several dangerous chemicals, including butylated compounds.

"They are hormone disrupters, they are toxic to your system," says Magana of butylated compounds.

Her clean alternative is Shay Moisture from Target.

Also, look out for phthalates in your face wash.

"What phthalates are a chemical to soften plastic. It damages the liver, kidney, lungs, and reproductive system," says Magana.

Magana says our shaving cream also includes carcinogens and hormone disrupters that could affect our reproductive system. So, make sure to check out the labels next time you're in the beauty aisle.
