BAYTOWN, Texas (KTRK) --Two years ago, The Haymans lived in an ordinary two story home.
They had plenty of space and a mortgage.
"We weren't happy at all," Toby explained. "We were up to our eyes in debt."
When family suggested they build a tiny house to save money, they laughed.
"They'll say, 'Oh, we live in a small house, too.' Then we show pictures and they're like, 'Oh, I see, and you have six kids.' And it's pretty much an 'I'm sorry,'" type deal," Toby Hayman laughed.
"I mean, like telling your wife, 'Hey you can only have like 25 percent of your clothes and you're only going to have 1/3 of the space.' She wanted to choke me," Toby laughed.
But necessity has a way of making things happen.
So, the Haymans started designing a home, coming up with clever ways to make the best use of just 396 square feet of space.
They were able to build the home and put in custom made tiny appliances for just $25,000.
But, right after they moved in, they got a surprise.

"The doctor ruined it for all of us, he said, 'Congratulations! You're pregnant!'" Toby laughed.
So now it's eight of them.
11-year-old Taylyn, nine-year-old Talee, three-year-old Tripp, two-year-old Tee, and, of course, the twins, Tinlee and Teal, both six months old.
Toby says the family spends more time together now than he ever expected.
"We used to get home from work, I would go to the kitchen and cook, she would go in the living room and take care of the little one. We would send the older ones upstairs. So, we were all in the same house, but we didn't have that much contact," he explained.
