Man walking on Gulf Freeway fatally struck

Fatal accident shuts down Gulf Freeway
A man walking on the highway was struck by a vehicle.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- All southbound lanes of the Gulf Freeway have reopend at Bellfort due to a fatal crash.

Officers say police received calls early Saturday morning about a man walking along the should of the highway. Officers were called to the scene to assist in getting him safely off the highway. Officers say after they arrived, the man started to cross the lanes of traffic when he was hit and killed.

"He was disgruntled talking to the officer and just indicated that he was having a bad time and the officer was trying to help him out and get him out of harm's way," said Captain Daryn Edwards with the Houston Police Department.

Investigators believe the man was attempting to take his own life.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. on Saturday morning.
