Men's Week: Comparing barber shops and chain salons

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We headed to the barber shop and salon to find out the differences of price and quality of haircuts and other services.

We visited The Shaving Grace Barber Shop inside Greenspoint Mall. A regular cut is $17. A cut and a shave is $22 and kids' cuts are $12.

At Sports Clips in southwest Houston, a basic cut costs $20. If you want your hair washed and head massaged add another $3.

At TGF, the normal price is $20.95, But on Tuesdays at participating locations, the price drops to $12. What does a regular cut include? It's a basic, simple cut, clip and clean up.

Here's where it pays for you to ask your stylist for some extras that are probably included.

Barber Vider Humphries at The Shaving Grace says ask your barber or stylist to trim up your eyebrows and ear hairs. These "extras" are usually complimentary.

If you want a hair wash, hot towel or scalp massage, it's typically another $3 to $5.

As far as the difference between the barber shops and the salons, the barber shop is typically exclusively for men. The barbers are trained to shave and use specific tools just for the guys. At a salon, many of the stylists are not trained barbers.
