Houston mayor calls for calm amid Super Bowl, immigration issues

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- All eyes are on Houston as the city prepares for Super Bowl weekend.

Now, there's a new concern after President Trump's executive order on immigration and refugees.

As the ban took place over the weekend, law enforcement beefed up security near the airport and at the George R. Brown Convention Center. About 1,500 protesters showed up at Bush Airport Sunday evening and officials say there may be even more protests this weekend as the city is expecting an influx of people from all over the globe.

The police chief says HPD has a strategic plan in place to handle what's to come. Today, Mayor Sylvester Turner said he welcomes people to make their concerns known but in a very peaceful way.

"We certainly don't want anything to happen that may lead to violence or lead to anything worse for our city," Turner said. "I know you will help maintain its development and I'm asking all Houstonians to join me in the city Council turn our law-enforcement community in maintaining the peace within our city."
