Captain charged with killing 16-year-old junior firefighter in fire station

A 16-year-old junior firefighter was shot and killed inside the Republic Volunteer Fire Company on Sunday afternoon. The Redstone Township Police Department received a report of a male suffering from a gunshot wound inside the Republic Volunteer Fire Company.

Police say the 16-year-old male had been struck in the face by a bullet. The teen died at the scene.

Police said Fire Captain George Matis Jr., 21, is now charged with criminal homicide. Matis was arraigned and then taken to Fayette County Jail pending a preliminary hearing.

WTAE reports that police are investigating and have yet to release the identity of the victim.

Police and fire agencies escorted the young man's body from the fire hall to the coroner's office in a procession.

Brownsville Area School District Superintendent Phillip Savini, Jr. said, "The district extends its sympathy and support to the family. The district will have counselors available on Tuesday when students return to school."
