A grocery store employee almost laughed off a robbery attempt until the suspect appeared to reach for a weapon, Friendswood police say.

The incident happened at the Kroger on Bay Area Boulevard and FM528 just before 3pm. According to police, a young woman approached the employee, saying "This is a robbery, give me everything you have."

Although she initially thought the suspect was joking, the store clerk complied after the suspect began to dig around her purse for a weapon.

The suspect left the store with an undisclosed amount of cash, escaping into a silver four-door sedan with a spoiler on the back.

Police describe the suspect as a thin, young black female who was wearing a green sweatsuit, a khaki baseball hat and black shoes. She was carrying what appeared to be a designer purse.

It's unclear if she was actually carrying a weapon.
